Chef Ben takes to the kitchen drawing on his years of restaurant experience and general love of food to produce a set ‘menu du soir’ using only the best locally sourced ingredients. The menu is announced on the day after a trip to the nearby markets.

The meal includes starter, main, cheese course, dessert and coffee or tea.

A complimentary glass of Pineau des Charentes, the local aperitif is also offered at the start of the meal if you wish!

Dinner is served at 19.30 at individual candle lit tables in the dining room. A carefully chosen wine list is available.

WINE LIST

We offer a carefully chosen selection of delicious French wines. Most local to us we have wines from the Poitou Charentes as well as fief vendéens from the nearby Vendée.

The Charente Maritime is south of the Loire and North of Bordeaux - we have some wonderful wines from both of these famous wine producing regions.

Or if you’re in the mood for celebrating we have some delicious sparkling crémant from the Loire, or both independent and big name Champagnes.

In addition local artisan beers are also available, as well as a selection of soft drinks.

BREAKFAST

A French continental breakfast is served every morning from 8.30 - 10.00.

A bountiful selection of croissants & breads fresh from the Boulangerie, orange juice freshly squeezed each morning, a selection of hams & cheeses, home baked treats such as banana bread & almond cake, brioche, a selection of conserves, yoghurt, homemade berry compote & plenty of fresh fruit. 

EATING OUT

Eating out is one of the many great pleasures of visiting France. We are in a rural setting but have some lovely places to eat nearby. Le Petit Caprice in Vouhé is a lovely traditional restaurant serving French home cooking, and a very reasonably priced ‘menu du jour’. Just 5 mins by car or a very enjoyable cycle ride down a country road. Or even closer in our village of Benon Sain Bol serves a simple lunch.

L’instant Z at Le Thou is one of our top local restaurants serving creative dishes with a modern touch. They are approx 20 mins by car and advance booking is recommended. For fans of Michelin starred dining you must try L’hysope at La Jarrie (One Michelin star) but please note advance booking is essential!

In nearby La Rochelle you are spoilt for choice, some of our favourites are L’Astrolabe, Les Flots, Les 4 Sergents & La Fleur de Sel,

If you’re day tripping to the Ile de Ré you will find lots of fresh seafood (“fruits de mer”) particularly oysters are widely available! Or treat yourselves to a meal at L’Avant Port in the idyllic port town of Saint Martin de Ré.

If you’re heading into the Marais Poitevin why not try Le Boeuf en Ecailles not far from Coulon. Or further towards Niort Auberge de la Roussile is housed in an old water mill in a quiet rural setting. A gentle walk along the river is a great way to work off a big lunch! Or for something a bit more gastronomique we highly recommend La Belle Etoile.

On Sunday evenings in July & August our local restaurant Le Petit Caprice is open. Otherwise you will need to head to La Rochelle where there will be places open. Or if you’ve picked up some goodies locally you are welcome to create your own picnic in the park.
